Thoughts and Theories

Act I, Scene One

question one

If I were in Mr. Frank’s position after the Holocaust, I would return to my place of hiding. I would return because if I were in his position, I would want to have at least a few items to remember my family by. Also, as in scene one, I would want to find any journals or diaries in the home so that I could have documents to give to future generations that recounted the horrors of the Holocaust, so as to prevent anything like it from happening again. Lastly, I would want to salvage anything useful. This would help me get my feet on the ground after being released from the concentration camp.

Act I, Scene Two

Question one

I would be able to be a protector like Miep or Mr. Kraler. First, I would be able to carry out the logistical processes of hiding 8 people. Doing so would require the careful planning of smuggling food and other basic necessities. I believe that I would be able to smuggle goods without raising suspicion by making up creative lies of why I needed the extra goods, as well as seeking help from other friends to assist in illegally transporting them. Furthermore, being a protector requires discreetness. As I know when to keep my mouth shut, I would be able to keep a secret. While being a protector may cause you to be arrested, if I must do so, I will be able to throw those I am protecting under the bus in order to save myself. While I may feel guilty, they would not has even survived this long if it were not for me.

Act 1, Scene Four

Question Two

If I were in hiding for as long as they were, I would miss my phone the most. Being in hiding, it is very unlikely they they would be able to use a phone, as doing so is trackable. I would miss my phone as I can use it to communicate with my friends, something I would not be able to do if in hiding, as I could not leave to physically meet my friends. Furthermore, my phone can provide entertainment during times when silence is mandatory. As I am accustomed to entertainment being only a few taps away, I would be very bored without my phone while in hiding.

Act II, Scene Two

Question one

When Peter tells Anne that he doesn’t need friends, she is taken aback. She argues that he does. I personally take Anne’s side in thinking that you do need friends to be happy. I think this because friends are sort of like family; without them life becomes extremely difficult and depressing and leaves you with no one to turn to in times of need. Friends also make you feel happy on a day-to-day basis.

Act II, Scene Three

Question One

Mr. Frank’s quote means that the families will destroy themselves before the Nazis get to them. This means that the families will fight and bicker so much that they will be driven mad before the Nazis get to their hiding place. For instance, the families fight over everything, including food, water, and personal space. This is seen when Mr. Van Daan is caught stealing food and is almost thrown out by Mrs. Frank.

Act II, Scene Five

Question Two

Anne stops writing in the diary after they are arrested. Thus, the diary only tells of their experiences in hiding. However, after being arrested, Anne and her family would be forced to concentration camps and experience much more. A key part of the story of the Holocaust is the horrible conditions of the concentration camps. Therefore, if a student only reads of Anne in hiding, they do not truly understand Anne’s full story.
