 PCBU - A PCBU can be a business owner, manager of a shopping centre, CEO of a corporation, unincorporated body or governmeent department. It does not include a volunteer association.

 

Everyone should learn some basic First Aid techniques. You knever know when you might need them. You could be at home, work, school or on holidays.

Whether it's a minor situation or something more serious, First Aid knowledge will give you the confidence to act. You could be the difference between life or Death. 

 

In the WHS Regulations its states that every PCBU has a legal responsibility for ensuring adequate First aid. Access to a qualified first aid individual is necesarry at any time of the day or night. If there are situations where the risk assessment deems a trained first aid person is not necessary, it is still a requirement that alternative procedures are used; for example, having access to emergency transport or special arrangements with a local medical centre.

D - Danger

Ensure the area is safe for yourself, others and the patient.

R - Response

Check for response - ask name - squeeze shoulders.

No response > send for help.

Response > Make comfortable, check for injuries, monitor response.

S - Send for help

Call triple 0 (000) for an ambulance or ask someone else to make the call.

A - Air way

Open mouth, if foriegn material is present > Place in recovery possition, clear airway with fingers.

Open airway by tilting the head with chin lift.

 B - Breathing

Check for breathing > look, listen & feel.

Not normal breathing > Start CPR

Normal breathing > Place into recovery position, monitor breathing, manage injuries, treat for shock.

 C - CPR

Start CPR - 30 chest compressions: 2 breaths.

Continue CPR untill help arrives, or patient recovers.

 D - Defibrillation 

Apply defibrillator if available and follow voice prompts

Why is it important to learn first aid methods?

You're on your way to work and see a old man laying on the floor. You check the area is safe and then walk over to him, you ask him questions and he does'nt respond. What steps do you take next?

S - Send for help

Match the meanings with the words

Call triple zero (000) for an ambulance or ask someone else to make the call

Starr CPR - 30 chest compressions; 2 breaths.
