On Febuary, 1, 1960, four African American college students sat down in a lunch counter at Woolworth's in Greensboro, North Carolina, and polietly asked for service. Their request was refused. When they were asked to leave, they remained seated.  Their resistance and peaceful-sit down helped inspire young and adult African Americans throughout the South.
