Humans need a balanced diet and excercise in order to live healthy lives, but what does our food need to be healthy? We will look at each food group to see what plants and animals need to be healthy so we, in turn, can be healthy.
What do Vegetables Need to be Healty?
Like most plants vegetables need light, food, water, and warmth. Most vegetables need an average of 6 hours of sunlight. The soil provides a place for plant roots to grow and to draw up nutrients.
Vegetables need 1 - 2 inches of water each week. The air and soil temperature is most important for seed growth. Some seeds do best in cool soil (lettuce, peas, radishes) others need warm soil (tomatoes, squash, corn) to grow.
Like vegetables fruits need water, sunlight, space, and food. Fruit trees need to be watered whenever the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Fertilizer, food, is needed based on the plant's growth. If the fruit tree stops growing as quickly then it needs more fertilizer.
What does Fruit Need to Grow?
Fruit needs full sunlight to grow. When starting out fruit trees need to be spaced out from each other, but do not take up too much space. An important thing is to make sure that the soil is well drained. Many fruits grow in tropical areas along the equator where they get a lot of sun.
What do Grains Need to Grow?
Grains are a little like vegetables and fruit in the way they need sunlight, food, water and space. They are easier to keep alive than fruit or vegetables.
According to Organic Gardening a good way to control weeds from popping up around grains is to sprinkle hay when the grains are planted. The hay also helps keep the moisture under control. Grains are found commonly in the Mid-West or "bread basket" of America.
