Protection Matters

Dear Mr.Pig

Protectors like Miep were hard to find. She was very brave to take on that task knowing she could end up like the Jews did. If I was asked to become a protector I would have to turn those who asked down. My reasoning is it was a hard task to handle and hide, and if they were found I could end up the same way they did. I am not a good liar and it would be hard to make excuses and lie straight to the face of an officer. I would also not be able to hide them and I would be extremely nervous that I would slip up and they would be found.

The Hiding

Dear Mr.Pig

In the diary of Anne Frank the families start to bother and annoy each other after several months in hiding. If I was in hiding with the families I would find Peter to be the easiest to get along with. The reason I think this is because he is very quiet and likes to be by himself more than with others. Peter also tends to not be very talkative and when he does it's not long and annoying. I would also find Anne the hardest to get along with because she talks too much, asks too many questions, and I am the complete opposite of her.

Cabin Fever

Dear Mr.pig

If I was in hiding for as long as the group in hiding, I would long for many things as they did. One of the things I would want to do most is to go bike riding or the ability to go and ride in a car and go somewhere. I most of all would love the ability to be able to walk down the street and not worry about being taken away. It would be so nice after all those months to finally breathe fresh air and be in the sun. That is what I would want to do first after we come out of hiding.

The Destruction

Dear Mr.Pig

Mr. Frank claims that the group that is hiding in the attic is bringing about their own destruction without assistance from the Nazis in the world around them. The group is arguing and quarreling over everything, whether the issue is large or small. Mr. Frank’s specific line is said when Mr. Van Daan is caught stealing food and Mrs. Frank has a breakdown. They are destroying themselves by wanting to expel each other from the hiding place. Doing so would be almost certain death, as the war had progressed and Jews walking around openly would likely be caught. Expelling someone from the hiding place would be sending them to die.

Shame

Dear Mr.Pig

At the end of The Diary of Anne Frank, Mr. Frank says that Anne puts him to shame. It is an appropriate ending to the story because of how Anne Frank’s diary compelled readers. Anne’s diary varied from other diaries written during the war because Anne mentions both sides of the story, good and bad. Mr. Frank did not think nearly as highly of humanity as Anne did. Anne believes that “people are really good at heart”. Anne’s opinion of the world is a much brighter one, despite how the last few years of her life were lived.

The End

The quote repeated at the end of the book is, “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.” Anne lived in hiding before going into a concentration camp and dying there. Yet, she remained optimistic while in hiding. The Gestapo took Jews to a place where they may die, but Anne believed that not all people were as bad as the Nazi party. This quote is important to Anne’s character and memory because Anne’s diary compelled readers by being optimistic at times. If Anne was not as optimistic, her diary would have joined the many other pessimistic diaries that will never be published.

The Beginning of the End

Dear Mr. Pompe,
Earlier in the play, Anne was irritated by various trivial matters. In Scene I of Act II, she becomes more mature and understanding. When the adults scold the children for talking about wishing for the end, Anne interrupts the scolding by pointing out how the children are holding onto ideals. Anne observes that the adults have already had a chance to experience the world. Instead of lashing back at any scolding, she argues with her mother over ideals and concepts. A concept such as wishing for the end to come is a mature topic.
