This survey gathers feedback on school effectiveness measures, including:      Effective leaders Collaborative teachers Involved families Supportive environments Ambitious instruction Responses are anonymous. District 67 teachers and 6th-8th grade students will also participate. Results will be sent to districts in May and will be on the State School Report Card. Although parent data isn't included in the Report Card, your participation will help us guide improvement across our schools. As of January 27, we are at only 12% of parents district-wide (Hynes 12% and Golf 12%) completing this important survey. We need to have at least 20% for the survey to be valid and for us to receive a report about parent satisfaction. Please click here to go to the survey. 2 Golf School District 67 Newsletter Vol 1, Learning English in D67 The Golf School District 67 community enjoys a rich mixture of cultures and languages. Our district’s English Language (EL) Program serves as a gateway for many students to successfully enter our schools. Our EL program currently serves 45 children who speak 18 different languages and come from 15 different countries. Our EL teacher is Amy Feinstein, who works with students from Pre-K through 8th grade at both Hynes Elementary School and Golf Middle School. At Hynes , Amy is assisted by Jeschelle Marcello, who works in small groups with Kindergarten to 4th grade students. At Golf Middle School, Lisa Brown assists Amy part-time for students in the 5th-8th grade. Students are placed in our EL program based on two screening tools: a Home Language Survey and several objective assessments of their current English language skills, depending on their grade levels.    Jeschelle Marcello     Pre-IPT is used for pre-school students MODEL is used for Kindergarten W-APT is used for 1st through 8th grades Our EL program model is a Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI). In this program model, students receive special assistance from EL staff as they learn how to speak, listen, read, and write in English. Program benefits include: Amy Feinstein Fostering academic achievement Preserving linguistic and cultural heritage Enabling non-English speakers to learn a second language Bilingualism leads to better attention and problem solving skills The PTA hosts the International Celebration of Cultures in late January. Lisa Brown For this celebration, students research their native country and this year, an open house will be held for our EL Parents. At the open house, the students will present their country report and have an opportunity to share and take pride in their culture. In addition, there are important supports for our parents of EL students. We provide translation services for report cards, and written and oral translations at meetings. The Niles Township ELL Parent Center also offers many opportunities for parents to take free classes. In the future, we hope to offer EL classes within our district during the week. The ELL Parent Center provides resources for ACCESS Assessment Update the families of English Language Learners throughout Skokie. Jointly supported by school districts in Niles Township, it offers English classes, health information and support for families who may be unfamiliar with American schools. Services are free for families of Niles Township public school children. As mandated by state law, all District 67 students receiving English language/bilingual services must take the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners (ACCESS) assessment each year to measure English language proficiency. The ACCESS test will be administered between January 25th and February 25th. A publication of the Golf School District 67 Board of Education 2

The district will now begin collecting an annual transportation fee of $150 to partially offset the costs of transportation. There are reductions in per-student costs for families with more than one rider. The table reflects clubs offered over the past three years. Clubs and activities may vary based on student interest and staff availability. Transportation costs in District 67 decreased each year from 2011-12 through 2014-15. There was a slight cost increase in 2015-16. If the District had not contracted out for transportation services this year, the increase would have been significantly more, as two or three of the District’s buses needed to be replaced. Assuming a ridership of 560 students, total transportation costs will be about $213,000 or about $380 per student for 2015-16. Over the past several years, transportation in District 67 has been free to our families. Free transportation is simply not sustainable, as it takes money that should go into our classrooms and instruction. We are implementing this fee so that we can support the educational needs of our students in Golf School District 67. A publication of the Golf School District 67 Board of Education 3

4 Golf School District 67 Newsletter Vol 1, Transportation Update North Shore Transit and A&B Bus Service are the district’s transportation providers. We understand that while this transition presented challenges, it has gone well overall. These transportation providers are committed to satisfying the transportation needs of the Golf School District 67 families and students. Observing the following rules will ensure that student safety and efficiency are our primary focus:     Students will be picked-up and dropped-off only at designated bus stops. Parents of pre-school students must board the bus and assist in seating and receiving their child. Kindergarten parents must be at the bus stop to receive students. Students MAY NOT ride an alternate bus. Parents should first contact the respective bus company about routing questions or problems. The Great Kindness Challenge Students in Golf School District 67 will take the Great Kindness Challenge at Hynes Elementary School during the week of February 8-12, and at Golf Middle School during the week of February 22-26. This event is devoted to having our students perform as many acts of kindness as possible. At the heart of the Great Kindness Challenge is the simple belief that kindness is strength, and that it helps to promote a positive, peaceful culture in our schools. The challenge began in 2012 by the nonprofit Kids for Peace with just three schools participating. In 2015, over 4,100 schools united and inspired over 109 million acts of kindness. We are excited to join schools across the nation in proving that kindness matters! “No act of kindness no matter how small, is ever wasted.” ~Aesop A publication of the Golf School District 67 Board of Education 4
